How the game works

2048 is a sliding tile puzzle. Your goal is simple: combine tiles to create one with the number 2048.

1

Slide all tiles at once

Every move shifts all tiles on the board in the direction you choose — up, down, left, or right. There are no individual tile moves.

2

Matching tiles merge

When two tiles with the same number collide, they combine into one tile worth their sum. Two 64s become a 128, two 128s become a 256, and so on.

3

A new tile appears

After each valid move, a new tile — either a 2 or a 4 — appears in a random empty cell on the board.

4

Reach the goal tile to win

Each board size has its own goal: 1024 on 3×3, 2048 on 4×4, 4096 on 5×5, and so on — the goal doubles with each size step. Reach it to win, then keep going if you want.

5

Game over when no moves remain

The game ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can be merged. Plan ahead to keep as many empty cells open as possible.

How your score grows

Every time two tiles merge, their combined value is added to your score. Bigger merges earn more points — chasing high-value merges is the key to a top score.

Tips to reach 2048

📐

Pick a corner and commit

Keep your highest-value tile in one corner at all times. Build outward from it. Most experienced players use the bottom-left or bottom-right corner.

➡️

Stick to two directions

Try to move mostly in two complementary directions (e.g. right and down). Avoid moving in the direction that would dislodge your highest tile from its corner.

🏗️

Build a snake pattern

Arrange your tiles in descending order from the corner — like a snake winding across the board. This keeps big tiles adjacent and ready to merge.

🫙

Keep cells free

A full board means game over. Prioritize moves that keep empty cells open, especially in the early and mid game.

🎯

Plan two or three moves ahead

Think about where the new tile will appear and how that changes your options. React less, anticipate more.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after you reach 2048?
You win! A victory screen appears and you can choose to keep playing. The game continues until no moves remain, so you can chase 4096, 8192, or even higher tiles and keep growing your score.
Can a tile merge more than once per move?
No. Each tile can only merge once per move. So if three 4s are in a row, two of them merge into an 8, and the third stays as a 4 — it won't chain-merge into the 8 in the same move.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Your game is automatically saved in your browser after every move. Your best score is also saved per board mode. If you close the tab and come back, you'll pick up right where you left off.
Does 2048 Clean work offline?
Yes — after your first visit, 2048 Clean works fully offline. You can also install it as a PWA (Progressive Web App) from your browser's install prompt to play it like a native app anytime.
What's the difference between Score and Best?
Score is your total points for the current game, which grows each time you merge tiles. Best is your all-time highest score for the current board mode, saved permanently in your browser.
Are there any ads?
No forced ads. 2048 Clean is designed to be a clean, distraction-free experience.
